Meet the Evil Overlord Team

Rickland Powell, CEO

Rickland Powell of Evil Overlord Games
Chief Evil Overlord

Rickland Powell is the senior member of the management team at Evil Overlord Games. An entrepreneur of over 30 years, Mr. Powell is one of the most successful growers of small businesses in the Boston area, having founded 16 companies, five of which have had successful exits and three of which are still in operation. He has significant computer game experience, having been the Executive Vice President of Turbine Entertainment and later, the Executive Vice President of Mayhem Games as well. He also served on the Board of Directors for Rampart Studios, another games company. Now on his seventeenth venture, Mr. Powell continues to launch exciting businesses to support his unfortunate acting habit. As Chief Evil Overlord (what, you thought CEO stood for something else…?), he finds the talent for the organization and makes them offers they can’t refuse. At least not more than once…

Victoria Root, Chief Writer

Tori Root Of Evil Overlord Games
Evil Storylord

Victoria (Tory) Root is the President and Chair of the Board of Directors of Evil Overlord Games, Inc. She is responsible for the corporate activities of the company, and heads the game design team. Ms. Root has been involved in the development and production of live-action roleplaying games for nearly a decade, both alone and in collaboration. She has received great acclaim for her games run at Intercon (a major live roleplaying convention in New England), including winning the Iron GM Contest in 2013, and her games are often among the first to fill through the convention’s first-come-first-served sign-up system. Ms. Root’s literary ambitions predate her working memory, and she now boasts a long history of well-received professional and personal writing projects and holds a Bachelors in Literature from Bennington College. Her extensive experience writing and running LARPs – mostly for the joy of making players cry – has prepared her well for her new career as an Evil Overlord.

Andrew Menard, Chief Architect

Andrew Menard of Evil Overlord Games
Lead Technomancer

Andrew Menard is the secretary of the corporation and a member of the Board of Directors of Evil Overlord Games, Inc. He is the backbone of our technical team, responsible for the design and creation of our game engine and content editor. He has been a key technological member of several major computer game companies in New England, including 38 Studios and Turbine Entertainment. He has also been involved in the development and production of live-action roleplaying games since the 90s, when he joined the MIT Assassins’ Guild, and has since maneuvered his way into the post of Grandmaster of that organization. Mr. Menard earned and was awarded a SB (because MIT) in Math w/ Computer Science from MIT. He enjoys spending most of his free time competing in boardgame tournaments, and owns more stuffed dragons than you do.

Edwin Karat, Creative Managing Director

Edwin R. Karat of Evil Overlord Games
Evil Advisor

One of the four founding members, Evil Advisor is the primary game designer on Evil Overlord’s flagship project and the mastermind behind pulling this team together. He has been diligently working with the team, attending meetings, contributing to the design of the game world, brainstorming significantly difficult game balancing problems, and preparing to join the team full time in April. He began writing LARPs in college, and after obtaining two BS degrees from UC Berkeley and a PhD in Mathematical Particle Physics from MIT, he began a career making sure that nobody on a plane pays the same price for the same trip. After another 15 years of LARP writing, square dancing, and thwarting the plans of air travellers, he decided to round up some co-conspirators to become evil overlords. He also dabbles in voice acting by playing Martin in the Hitherby Dragons Storytime Voicecast.

Duncan Eagleson, Art Director

Duncan Eagleson of Evil Overlord Games
Evil Artlord

Illustrator, graphic designer, author, painter and sculptor, Duncan Eagleson has created art and designs for book covers, movie posters, advertisements, corporate identity projects, videos, magazines, and even T-shirts for clients including Doubleday Books, Tor Books, New Line Cinema, Warner Communications & DC Comics, The Who, The Clash, Phil Collins, and Def Leppard. In comics, he contributed art to Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Peter Milligan’s Shade the Changing Man, and adapted and illustrated Anne Rice’s The Witching Hour. He is also an award winning maskmaker, and has created sculpted leather masks for Wes Craven’s film Cursed, the WWE wrestler Kane, the Smithsonian, the Big Apple Circus, and magician Jeff McBride. Duncan has previously served as art director for Necon Ebooks and for Pink Narcissus Press. He is rarely seen out of doors without a dashing waistcoat.

Kamela Dolinova, Communications Manager

Kamela Dolinova of Evil Overlord Games
Minister of Mind Control

Kamela Dolinova has many years of experience as a freelance writer, teacher, coach and counselor, and theatrical artist. While further honing her writing, people-wrangling, and persuasive skills as the social media and office manager at Demiurge Studios, she discovered a new home in game development. She has run a successful Kickstarter campaign (to mount a free Shakespeare in the park production), created promotional videos and other materials for numerous game-related projects, coordinated live theatrical, fundraising, and entertainment events, and written countless words for a multitude of audiences. She brings her various talents together as Evil Overlord’s so-called Minister of Mind Control, where she works hard to shape and disseminate a message of peace, love, and underhandedness. She holds a BA in Theatre Arts from Drew University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, and thereafter, having flown over many knavish professions, she settled only in rogue.

Caelyn Sandel, Game Writer

Caelyn Sandel of Evil Overlord Games
Literary Miniboss

Caelyn Sandel  brings a wealth of urban fantasy writing experience to Evil Overlord Games. In addition to being a self-published novelist, Caelyn has been writing LARPs since the year 2000, and started developing numerous award-winning Interactive Fiction games in 2010. She is no stranger to professional game development, either: Caelyn worked as a filter QA tester for Harmonix Music Systems during the development of the first three Dance Central games. She is thrilled to become a contributing member of the Evil Overlord creative team, especially given that she was not fired or murdered for greeting Tory on her second day with “I’m going to whiteboard at you” before anyone had made the morning coffee.

Kevin is a Massachusetts-born nerd who has been working in the games industry since graduating from college. He has worked both as a quality assurance tester and game systems designer on many different games, including Fieldrunners Attack! and Lord of the Rings Online. He is known among his friends as someone who cares far too much about numbers, and knows far too many puns.
